NEW YORK — The last paragraph of the open letter I wrote to President Benigno Aquino III, published in this same space Aug. 17, 2010, read: “Our local film industry we sadly acknowledge to be gasping for breath. Help us bring it back to its feet and nurse it back to health. Give us an MTRCB chairman who has roots in the film industry, an insider who knows well enough not to be manipulated by the unscrupulous among us but at the same time knowledgeable and inspiring. We cannot afford an MTRCB chairman who lets whimsy overrule the Constitution.”
Then just as even the most rabid anti-censor among us was ready to give up, throw in the towel, and accept the present chairman’s reappointment as reality, the Office of the President yesterday announced, through Deputy Presidential Spokesma Abigail Valte, the appointment of Grace Poe-Llamanzares as the new head of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, with film director Emmanuel Borlaza as vice-chairman.
The name of Consoliza, the outgoing, refers to comfort received by a person after a loss or a disappointment, while that of Grace, the incoming, aptly means a short prayer of thanks. This can’t be coincidence, we should really be grateful.
We wanted an MTRCB chairman who has roots in the film industry, that’s Grace Poe. An insider who knows well enough not to be manipulated by the unscrupulous among us, that’s Grace Poe. At the same time knowledgeable and inspiring, and again, that’s Grace Poe..... MORE
