Elections are almost upon us. You can tell from the frenzied campaigning going on at almost every level — national to barangay.

The streets are littered with the usual flyers and posters falling from their tenuous perch on posts and trees. Electrical wires look even uglier with the added burden of the same smiling faces of well-fed political hopefuls. When you look up, you might wonder when April went by as the May-time feel is evoked too early by banners strung like fiesta banderitas. And if you’re unlucky, your quiet Sunday morning might be jolted by blaring horns and campaign ditties pretending to be hit music.
Election season is never enjoyable except for those who are part of it. Ordinary folks going about their daily business have learned not to get caught up in the furor and frenzy. They know that something akin to an imaginary world is created in these campaign periods. The candidates strive to convince voters by exaggerating reality and using every means possible to gain advantage over their competitors. They create scenarios and vistas based on even the smallest, simplest fact and build it up as something great and inspirational..... MORE
