Somewhat belatedly, this outsider has recently read Stanley Karnow’s Pulitzer Prize winner In Our Image: America’s Empire in the Philippines (Ballantine Books, 1989), essentially an account of US involvement in this country.

Reynaldo Ileto accuses Karnow of “orientalism.” His aim, Ileto charged in a lecture entitled “Orientalism and the Study of Philippine Politics” (collected in Knowing America’s Colony, University of Hawai’i, 1999), is to “establish a binary opposition between positive ‘American’ and negative ‘Filipino’ values and this resonates well with his audience, for much of what he claims to lie beneath Filipino exteriors conforms by and large to Euro-American myths of backward, undeveloped peoples.”

In his source notes, Karnow describes American Caesar, William Manchester’s biography of MacArthur, as being “riddled with small errors.” This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.... MORE
