Head-to-head

DIE HARD III

Herman Tiu Laurel
11/13/2009

US State Secretary Hillary Clinton is getting an enthusiastic welcome from American lackeys in the country. The MILF has given her a really heady “pasalubong”: Beheading the principal of a small rural Mindanao school the week before Hillary arrived. There was absolutely no reason for such a gruesome demonstration by the MILF at this time, but that act calls attention to the MILF, its separatist cause and gives fodder to US and government propaganda to psy-war Filipinos into accepting the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MoA-AD) and its Bangsa Moro Juridical Entity.

It is ridiculous to believe Hillary came to talk about aid for the “Ondoy” flood victims or the VFA. Their embassies iron out these things. But the MoA-AD is top priority for the State Secretary as the popular and Armed Forces of the Philippines’ opposition to it has continued to fester.

Philippine-US special relations is a trademark of the 21 years of the Yellow Era of Corazon Aquino. After the Americans found Marcos becoming too independent for comfort they prepared the first “color revolution” in the 20th century to usher in “globalization.” The Philippines was the laboratory for the IMF “structural conditionalities” in the 1950s. In the 1980s it was the “Yellow people power” and then other color revolutions followed in Yugoslavia, Georgia and Ukraine. In a recent television appearance Ambassador Kristie Kenney called attention to the fact that she wore yellow there, a subtle way showing the US color in our 2010 elections.

The type of surrogate leader the US likes for its satellites are: The buyable, bribable and dispensable. Gloria Arroyo fits the type to a tee. I didn’t figure that the US has a new category, but we can take a cue from the Russian experience: The headless Yeltsin. In the Philippines they seem to be carrying this option to new heights: The Yellow dummy. He is their best choice. Gibo is okay for the US, he is openly obsequious and articulate but not credible. The one they invited for Obama’s National Prayer Breakfast is okay too, as cogent as Gibo without the “kiss of death” from Gloria Arroyo; but his political careerism has lost its moorings when he left the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC). From a luxury liner he’s been cast off on a raft, no one can tell if the winds will carry his ambitions or sink it.

America and Hillary’s choice will be the Yellows that they have built up over the decades so lovingly and painstakingly. It’s got all the myths that the US oligarchy loves to promote to hide its unrelenting predatory rampage all over the world. It’s got the myth of “democracy” which desperately needs refurbishing today. The Ninoy Aquino statue in Makati has clearly lost its luster, Jaime Zobel de Ayala has introduced a new stunt: He’s designed a new “Cory Watch” with a yellow strap, declaring that yellow is the new color of courage. We all know yellow is the color of cowardice, and of jaundice — the color of betrayal and treason.

The Makati corporatist oligarchs are mobilizing their business school, the AIM (Asian Institute of Management), for propaganda, too. The radio reported that AIM conducted a survey showing the Yellow dummy candidate ahead but declining only marginally, from 53 percent down to 49 percent. It’s a blatant attempt to cushion the impact of surveys showing the Yellow dummy’s drastic fall. One unannounced (and why I trust it more) survey shows the Yellow dummy dropped 10 percent from his September of 52 percent during his announcement of his candidacy to the past weeks at 42 percent. The most significant thing is that this is a trend. The ABS-CBN/Inquirer propaganda favoring the Yellow dummy is wearing off, with seven months to go and the Aquino SCTex land scandal now being exposed the polls slide will become a crash.

The AIM survey ranked the candidates: The Yellow dummy on top, followed by Chiz Escudero, Villar and then Gibo. They excluded President Estrada because, it said, of the disqualification threat. But why omit Estrada if disqualification is not even a reality yet. The AIM survey is really intended to discourage Estrada voters. According to the radio announcer Estrada actually placed third. Estrada supporters are not at all fooled. Estrada’s radio-TV ads (aired only one day, during Erap’s Tondo “proclamation” rally) are outnumbered 100 to 1 by the Yellow dummy and Villar’s propaganda (they have been airing for over three months). Estrada has not even begun his propaganda blitz but his latest movie with Ai-Ai de las Alas gives us an indication — Estrada is a box office hit.

The head-to-head test of the nation’s faith and support will come in the last months of the election campaign. If the GMA regime and the Yellows believe they are runaway winners, they should join the nation in demanding an end to all talk about the disqualification of any candidate and let the principle of the Popular Will prevail at all times. The people want a leader that will go head-to-head with the exploiters, enemies and crises of this country: The US and domestic exploiters, the separatist MILF, the anarchist NPA, economic decay, unemployment, poverty, hunger, globalization and privatization, drugs, disease. This country and Erap have shown that together they can go head-to-head against all comers. This time around we just have to quickly expose the enemies within rearing their ugly heads.
