Corrupt ways persist

Corruption in government remains a major issue for the country despite the incessant trumpeting of Noynoy about his straight path which constitutes the supposed ratcheting up of efforts to stamp out graft. But the perception among businesses is that the practice of giving favors to cronies and allies persist.

Noynoy is carrying around like a trophy in his recent trips to the United States and the United Kingdom the conviction of former Chief Justice Renato Corona as a bragging right for his anti-corruption efforts. Yet it appears to have a very little effect on changing the perception of pervasive corruption in the country.

The recent Heritage Foundation economic freedom index showed all the hypocrisy and hype about the clean government of Noynoy hardly reflected in improving the image of the country..... MORE

Going by the names of the various nominees for the top post in the judiciary that are being reported, one wonders whether Filipinos are so short of candidates who are more distinguished and fit for the post of the Chief Justice of the Philippines.

Leila de Lima, current Justice chief whose name has been bandied about by Noynoy and his aides as fit to become the chief justice, is a candidate for disbarment, aside from the fact that she was one of the attack dogs of Noynoy in demonizing the impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.

How on earth can one, who has a case of disbarment against her, as well as one who has attacked not only Corona but the Supreme Court itself even be considered for the post?.... MORE

Disinformation against Syria is criminal

Disinformation against Syria is criminal

Most mass media accuses the Syrian government for the crimes of more than 90 groups that have assassinated opponents.  They are based in London or Paris - and pointed to by some observers sent by the United Nations, but none of them consulted the authorities of that country.

Nor did they echo of serious complaints registered about the crimes and massacres carried out by mercenaries who are the Special Forces of the great powers seeping across borders with Syria.

"This means they keep on torturing the audience that still remains for them, telling the eternal tale of bombings and massacres by the Syrian army on civilians" the Swiss investigative journalist, Silvia Cattori  recently wrote - reporting among other cases, the non-existence of an alleged bombing by the Syrian government on March 23, 2012 that the press of the hegemonic powers described as "a deluge of fire in an incommunicado city.".... Russia: The Annan peace plan, irreplaceable

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Gennady Gatilov, in a meeting with the Special Envoy of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and the Arab League (AL) to Syria, Kofi Annan, said that the Annan peace plan is irreplaceable, according to a report released Tuesday by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Similarly, Gatilov has urged the international community to cooperate more when it comes to supporting the six point peace plan proposed by Annan.

"We must all work together to materialize the Annan peace plan," he said..... MORE

\"The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution (Article 2, Section 12).”

Let it be formally and expressly said that while someone must be good for something, not everyone however is fit for marriage intents and purposes.

This is a down-to-earth reality that is squarely premised on the inherent nature of and obligations intrinsic to marriage — such as the requirements of the required mental composition, emotional constitution and physical make-up of the concrete man and/or woman concerned. One thing is to simply desire marriage and definitely something else is to have the fitness, capacity or aptitude for getting married..... MORE

Child’s play

NO NONSENSE
Jacinto ‘Jing’ Paras

Like a child he has always been, this top official of our country is spending so much of government funds just to go to America and be with Daddy Barrack Obama and cry on his shoulder with a sob story of the country being bullied by China and asking Uncle Sam to come to Manila and confront China.

This official known as BS does not realize that by bringing America with the task of defending the Philippines when such move is so premature since diplomatic remedies are still being sought by the new Ambassador Brady, he will be scuttling the diplomatic initiative as China will be agitated and will surely react to such posturing from the Philippines and the US.

Certainly the act of BS in running to the sweets arms of Daddy Barrack also poses a danger to the lives of our people as the country with increased US military presence will bring the country closer to a direct confrontation with China. And any confrontation which will eventually result in war will surely bring hardships to the people..... MORE

US PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR SURVEILLANCE OF RP COAST

Noy backs US pivot to Asia, gets surplus

06/10/2012
President Aquino appeared to have obtained what he ventured to get from the United States in his official visit which is more surplus military hardware from the world superpower but likely at the cost of further incensing China which suspects the US of trying to encircle the emerging rival and in exchange for his unqualified support to the American government’s policy to pivot most of its forces in the Asia Pacific.

In a statement, US President Barack Obama pledged US support for Aquino’s efforts to upgrade the notoriously antiquated Philippine military and build a “minimum credible defense posture.”

Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said the US will support the setting up of a National Coast Watch System, which involves intelligence exchanges on maritime domain issues and funding for the construction of the National Coast Watch Center, as well as equipment and training..... MORE

Bishop on Palace CARP meet: ‘very technical’

06/10/2012
Malacañang calls it constructive while Church leaders opted to describe last Friday’s meeting among members of the Aquino government and representatives of farmer organizations and the Catholic Church in laying the groundwork for the full implementation of agrarian reform as “very technical.”

Malacañang and Church leaders, nonetheless, agreed to create a team that would monitor the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said this was the consensus after yesterday’s dialogue between government officials, church leaders and representatives of various farmers’ groups in Malacañang.

“It’s not clear yet how this will be done, but it was agreed to create a task force with the Church and Malacañang to monitor CARP’s implementation especially in fixing claim orders,” Pabillo said..... MORE

House exempts landowners from estate taxes on unpaid just compensation

By Charlie V. Manalo 06/10/2012

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading House Bill 6093, which sought to exempt from estate taxes the unpaid balance of just compensation due the original landowners or their descendants whose agricultural lands were acquired by the government under agrarian reform laws or orders.

House Bill 6093, principally authored by Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez seeks to exempt from said taxes the decedent owner (or his or her legal heirs or successors in interest) of agricultural land acquired by the government under Presidential Decree (PD) 27, Executive Order 22, EO 229, Republic Act 6657 and RA 9700, amending for the purpose Section 87 of the National Internal Revenue Code, 1997, as amended..... Junk Epira — KMU By Pat C. Santos 06/10/2012

Junk Epira — KMU

By Pat C. Santos 06/10/2012

The militant labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) has joined the recent protests against the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (Epira) or Republic Act 9136 in Mendiola, saying the law legalized plunder by allowing power firms to rake in profits at the expense of poor Filipinos.

This year marks the 10th year of the Epira’s implementation, being the first law passed under Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s presidency.

In a prepared statement KMU chairman Elmer “Ka Bong” Labog said the Epira’s passage into law 10 years ago was an imposition by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as part of the Arroyo government’s neo-liberal program for the economy.

“For workers and the toiling masses, the neo-liberal policies implemented by the Arroyo regime paved the way for unbridled plunder by foreign businesses in strategic industries..... MORE

Novaliches hosts century-old Katipunan tree 06/10/2012

Novaliches hosts century-old Katipunan tree

06/10/2012
A century-old Katipunan tree in Novaliches contains a 32-year-old marker that says: “This tree was a mute witness to historic events. This very site where it stands was once a wooded hill which was a staging area of the Katipuneros during the Philippine Revolution. Under this tree, the Katipuneros held meetings, treated their wounded. Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan, was here on several occasions.”

The tree, a blackberry or duhat tree (scientific name eugenia Cumini), is about four kilometers away from La Mesa Dam and the old Barangay Pasong Putik (now Lagro) in Novaliches, where Melchora Aquino or Tandang Sora, the Grand Old Lady of the Revolution, was arrested by the Spaniards in August 1896 prior to her imprisonment at the Bilibid Prisons in Manila and eventual exile to Guam.

The place is also just five kilometers north of the heroine’s birthplace at the now renamed Barangay Tandang Sora, formerly called Gulod ng Banilad or Banlat, Novaliches..... MORE
