The writing on the INC wall

Naturally it will be denied that the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) prayer rally was not political at all, and yet only a fool will not see just how political it was and clearly in support of the upholding of the rule of law and consequently, in full support of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

For one, Noynoy was not invited by the INC, even as the INC said that everybody was welcome to join its prayer rally, or Bible Exposition, and even when Noynoy tried to make it appear that he had been invited to join the rally but excused his non-appearance by claiming that he didn’t want to give the INC rally political color.

The fact is that Noynoy did not get a personal invitation from the INC head..... MORE

Utah asks for repeal of NDAA’s indefinite detention provisions

Utah asks for repeal of NDAA’s indefinite detention provisions

Utah is now the latest state to draft legislation specifically condemning the provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act that allow the president to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge.

The Utah House is currently considering legislation that would publically put down Congress for drafting the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, or the NDAA. The United States House and Senate passed the NDAA late last year before sending it to the White House for President Barack Obama to approve on December 31, 2011. Although the legislation legitimizes the use of funds for the US military to spend throughout 2012, it also includes some controversial provisions that grant the Executive Branch the power to indefinitely detain Americans considered terrorists in the eyes of the government..... Iran sanctions disrupting global oil supplies – US DOE

Iran sanctions disrupting global oil supplies – US DOE

Western-imposed sanctions are disrupting Iran's oil exports - and further pressure could affect global oil markets, says a report by the Energy Information Administration, an analytical agency of the US Department of Energy.

The West seems to be drowning itself with harsh economic measures levied against Iran in an attempt to punish it for a nuclear weapons program whose existence remains apocryphal. According to a bimonthly EIA report published Wednesday, sanctions are already undermining oil exports from the Islamic Republic, and further measures could tighten global oil markets that have already been hit by a rash of outages in other countries. The EIA, an independent arm of the Department of Energy, received input on the report from the departments of Treasury and State and the Director of National Intelligence..... MORE

Google defies law to implement new privacy policy

Google defies law to implement new privacy policy

Google has launched a controversial new privacy policy, despite evidence that it violates EU data protection laws. The US internet giant has turned a blind eye to the charge, pushing ahead with its March 1 start date.

Google’s new rules regulate how it uses the huge volumes of personal data it collects through its search engine, email and other services.

The search giant is creating more comprehensive user profiles that it maintains will enhance customer experience. It will do this by gathering data on individuals from a range of different applications and filing it under a single profile. In reality, the new policy will allow Google to access to a veritable font of personal information.

It is likely that the profiles will be used to sell advertising which is closely tailored to users’ tastes, boosting an already lucrative annual income of $38 billion..... MORE

WASHINGTON — Wikileaks’ decision to publish five million Stratfor e-mails swings a vast column of light on private intelligence firms, a murky and profitable corner of global business. But the view is less than flattering.

In any financial center, war zone or mineral-rich backwater, private intelligence staff are easy to stumble across.

Conspicuously inconspicuous, they can be found mingling at barbecues or muckraking at parties, trying to glean scraps information that could help or harm their clients in business and government..... MORE

Psychological records VIEWPOINTS Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz 03/01/2012

Psychological records

VIEWPOINTS
Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz
03/01/2012
Not really in the distant past on the occasion of the last national elections, the matter of certain “psychological records” was already then brought up to the attention of the general public. For those concerned with the emergence of objective truth, the issue became distinctly important for their pursuant decision making. On the other hand, for individuals preoccupied simply with partisan political interests, the same subject matter was merely meant as bad publicity if not a downright silly issue. Thus it was that while some people wanted the content of the said “psychological records” to be openly presented and accordingly made known, there are however those who preferred to simply ignore it as a cheap political ploy. And the matter rested there and then. So it seemed until here and now.

Thus it is that quite recently, the same question on the matter of “psychological records” was again expressly mentioned and brought to fore. And as before, there were contrasting reactions to it. Some are of the conviction that it is about time for all those concerned to eventually know what the same records really say — good or bad. The reason for this is simply to put the matter to rest once and for all. But as before, there are those who lose their composure by simply hearing its mere mention, who become not only angry but also panicky upon merely knowing the call for the opening thereof. Whatever the truth is about the records, there seems to be something distinctly ominous about them..... MORE

Impeachment court cites lawyer for contempt over Santiago slur

By Gerry Baldo and Charlie V. Manalo 03/01/2012

A member of the prosecution panel was cited for contempt by the Impeachment Court yesterday for protesting what he felt was Senator-Judge Miriam Defensor Santiago’s use of foul language while lecturing the prosecution panel over their decision to rest its case against Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Lawyer Vitaliano Aguirre II, a private prosecutor, told the court that he could not stand the words of Santiago. He covered his ears when Santiago was ranting about the sudden decision of the prosecutors to stop presenting witnesses and evidence and to drop five of the eight articles of impeachment.

“I did it purposely. Her voice was shrill and hurt my ears,” Aguirre told the court..... MORE

An 18-year-old girl was sentenced to life imprisonment for violating the anti-drug law she knowingly committed when she was still a minor two years ago.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Undersecretary Jose S. Gutierrez Jr. said that “Nene,” not her real name, was considered as a “Child In Conflict with Law” (CICL) since she was a minor when the crime was committed.

He added that Nene was released on recognizance to her mother pursuant to Section 35 of Republic Act 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, while her case was being heard in court..... MORE

Defense to present case March 12—JPE

By Charlie V. Manalo and Gerry Baldo 03/01/2012
Silence in the court, a term used by judges and justices, holds a different meaning when it comes to the recent developments in the trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona as the Senate impeachment court trial will literally go silent for at least two weeks, ending on March 12, 2012, when the CJ’s defense team, as ordered by presiding officer, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, will be presenting its case to disprove the charges leveled against Corona in the House prosecution’s articles of impeachment.

The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, yesterday ordered the resumption of the impeachment trial against the Chief Justice, after giving the prosecution two days, as asked by the prosecution for its pleadings and offers of evidence while giving the defense team five days to reply and counter and object to the prosecution’s charges.

In between, the Senate court will be taking up in caucus, among other things, the defense’s motion to quash the testimonies of the Philippine Savings Bank’s officers on the bank accounts of the Chief Justice, both dollar and peso accounts, on grounds that the evidence presented by the prosecution on the bank accounts of Corona have been illegally obtained.....
