Orthodox world celebrates Christmas
More than 30,000 churches and cathedrals across Russia have held
religious services as Russia celebrates Orthodox Christmas. In Moscow
alone, around 90,000 people have attended liturgies.
The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, has delivered the
Christmas Liturgy in the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, where
about 5,000 believers attended the liturgy and associated celebratory

"Christmas is also celebrated on January 7 by the Ukrainian, Georgian, Serbian and some other churches. Around 200 million people follow the Eastern tradition of worship.
"In one of the oldest Christian countries, Georgian worshippers began the holy day with midnight mass.
"In Bosnia, Serbs carried oak branches to be burned as part of their Christmas ritual. The fires are believed to warm the community with love and remove religious intolerance."

"In the Orthodox Church, Christmas is the second most important event of the calendar year after Easter. It is preceded by forty days of Lent when people do not eat meat or dairy products. The Christmas Lent, as it is called, begins on November 28 and finishes on Christmas Eve, on January 6, as the first star appears in the skies. The star symbolizes the one seen above Bethlehem at the moment Christ was born. Traditional Russian food for this occasion is “sochivo” which is usually made of wheat or rice, with some fruit and honey added. It gives the name to the day itself – “sochelnik”."
