Senior SC justice rapped for ‘spending on IBP delegates’ hotels’

Carpio’s CJ nomination slammed

By Benjamin B. Pulta

The two senior Supreme Court (SC) justices who have been nominated by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) now appear to be even -- at least in the number of complaints filed against their nominations.

Lawyer Fernando Campos earlier had filed a complaint against SC Senior Associate Justice Renato Corona, alleging that he had gone on vacation to see a Manny Pacquiao fight, on a free ticket, insinuating too that Corona was “paid off” to junk a case involving Campos.

The issue became a heated public issue, as Corona intimated that the“leak” of that complaint was made possible by a high court insider.... MORE

Erap vows to make RP a rice-exporting country

02/20/2010

Former President Joseph Estrada has assured farmers and environmental groups that if he becomes president again, he would make the Philippines a rice-exporting country.

“I will double rice production in Nueva Ecija by 2013 so that the Philippines will not only be self-sufficient in rice but also be able to export rice,” the standard-bearer of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino told farmers and the thousands of other supporters who greeted him for his campaign sortie through Nueva Ecija.

He added that an Estrada administration in 2010 will see the realization of the Philippines becoming a rice-producing and rice-exporting country.

“Food security through agricultural production is at the top of the Estrada Agenda for 2010,” Estrada said..... MORE

Villar admits pork infused in Iloilo road project

JIBAO-AN, MUNDURRIAO, Iloilo City -- Nacionalista Party (NP) standard bearer Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar yesterday admitted infusing some of his pork barrel funds to a road project in Iloilo for a road found along the stretch of his subdivision in the province but was quick to point out that he also allocated funds for other infrastructure projects in some parts of the province.

Speaking for the first time to reporters on the charges leveled against him by former Senate President Franklin Drilon on his alleged questionable acquisition and conversion of a 12.7-hectare property in the province that used to be a prime agricultural land under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), Villar scored what he said was yet another attempt to stain his reputation by his rival party.

“They should have raised this —any irregularity, if there is any -- long time ago. It’s a hallow opening to stir an issue. It’s like an eye of a needle. Why don’t they (Liberals) address a much bigger issue, that of a conversion of a 6,400 land in Hacienda Luisita?” Villar said, referring to the Liberal Party (LP) presidential bet Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s road conversion of parts of Hacienda Luisita.... MORE

It comes much too late, this call from Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales for Gloria Arroyo to display a sense of delicadeza, on the matter of her, along with her allies, seeking the speakership when the new Congress opens.
Rosales said hat instead of being Speaker, Gloria “should give others a chance to serve the country,” advising her further that she and her allies should think twice in the move of a president stepping down to become a Speaker, since none of the country’s past presidents have done what she is doing.

Not that we care to see Gloria Arroyo installed in the Speaker’s seat in the House of Representatives, but frankly, if Rosales’ political sentiment is one of giving others “a chance to serve the country,” then why did he, his bishops and the clerics, not advise her of the same thing when she ran for the presidency in 2004, and worse, continued to support her and her regime despite the evidence of the massive electoral fraud to ensure her victory?...
