LP hosts many Arroyo Cabinet outcast — NP

Whatever promises members of the Liberal Party (LP) are making to improve the lives of Filipinos should be taken with a grain of salt as many of them held key Cabinet positions in the Arroyo administration that they are now criticizing as cause of worsening poverty and hunger and millions of children failing to finish school.

“At one point, the Liberals lorded it over the Anti-Poverty and Economic Clusters of the GMA Cabinet, with billions of pesos at their disposal. Whatever economic crisis and crippling poverty situation we have right now, the Liberals are to blame. They played with the people’s billions, nothing happened,” Nacionalista Party (NP) spokesman Gilbert Remulla said.

LP members or the party’s major supporters who held Cabinet positions include Ralph Recto (National Economic Development Authority), Florencio Abad (Department of Education), Corazon Soliman (Department of Social Welfare and Development), Mar Roxas (Department of Trade and Industry), Teresita Quintos
Deles (National Anti Poverty Commission, Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process), Jose Lina (Department of Interior and Local Government), Rene Villa (Department of Agrarian Reform), Juan Santos (Department Trade and Industry), Cesar Purisima (Departme of Finance), Avelino Cruz (Department of National Defense), Imelda Nicolas (National Anti-Poverty Commission).... And so, after just five days into the official campaign, the air is filled with charges galore. Liberal Party (LP) presidential bet Sen. Noynoy Aquino started the ball rolling by pledging to (finally) distribute the family’s 6400 hectares (actually it’s now down to 4700 hectares after deducting the original HLI residential-cum-golf course complex and those converted into mixed use, i.e., industrial, commercial and part residential) after more than 50 years of waiting. Which is most welcome, of course. The only problem is that this is supposed to happen five years from now (by 2015) when the family has “unburdened” the holding firm from its debts so that the farmers get their portions “debt free.” The question that immediately arose is why wait for five years when the law says “now na.” Besides, if it is going to be CARPED the land will really be “debt free” since the payment to the original owners will be deducted from the payment anyway. Then, of course, there is the question of whether this pledge will push through, win or lose. Finally, the good senator’s campaign had to be asked: What if other family members balk at the suggestion and an intra-family battle ensues? These and other questions need to be answered soon before this issue continues to haunt the campaign to the very end... MORE

AFP concocts NPA plan to free ‘Morong 43’ By Mario J. Mallari 02/15/2010

Military peddles new ‘excuse’ for snubbing court order

AFP concocts NPA plan to free ‘Morong 43’

After drawing flak for the non-presentation of the arrested health workers, baptized by the media as the “Morong 43,” before the Court of Appeals (CA) last Friday as ordered by the Supreme Court (SC), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) yesterday came up with yet another excuse found to be incredible, to explain the military snubbing of the court habeas corpus order: There were reports of attempts by the New People’s Army (NPA) to rescue their arrested “comrades.”

“We have been receiving information that there is really a possibility that the NPA would launch rescue operations because those arrested were high value targets. There is a possibility of an ambush,” said AFP spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner.

The AFP said that among the arrested were NPA leaders, considered as “high-value targets,” holding positions in the national, regional and provincial level.

Nothing was presented to the media to substantiate the military claims.... MORE

For somebody who had gone through nine years of seeing the maneuvering of a kickback-oriented circle in Malacañang, it would be hard to miss the meaning of a $1.2 billion contract.

Since November last year, there was a frenzy in the Palace about a looming power shortage which started, supposedly, in Mindanao then spread to the Visayas and now Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Development had caught up with available power supply and soon the capacity of local power plants will not be enough to fill up the demand, thus the specter of outages looms, such as those that happened during the term of President Aquino when 12-hour brownouts were a daily fare.... MORE
