Estrada: ‘Decision lifts cloud of doubt on candidacy. All systems go’

Comelec clears Erap run

By Marie A. Surbano and Charlie V. Manalo

It’s all systems go for former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s second run for the presidency, a post he first held in 1998 only to be aborted by a coup d’etat instigated by the elite civil society and backed by treacherous military chiefs.

All arguments, rumors and innuendoes that Estrada is banned from running for the presidency again, or that he is withdrawing from the race, came to a stop after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday junked the three petitions filed last December seeking the disqualification of the former leader and in the process allowed Estrada to run in this year’s presidential
elections.

Reacting to the promulgation of the Comelec decision that cleared all legal obstacles to his running in the presidential race, Estrada was elated, saying that “nothing can make me happier than to continue serving our people.”

“This decision has lifted that cloud of doubt with respect to my candidacy. Now the people know that it is all systems go for Erap for the May elections.”....MORE

Being able to face the music is a true test of leadership, and from the looks of it, Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar has failed that test — and this, over a mere censure resolution that still would have to be voted upon by the senators.

Instead of frontally challenging the resolution on the C-5 controversy censuring him for unethical conduct and seeking the return of P6.2 billion involved in the changes done in the original road project that moreover were said to have benefited Villar and his real estate corporations, he and his supporters wanted the Senate committee of the whole’s (ScoW) resolution covered up, and killed, through the unseating of the Senate President, to get Villar absolved by the Senate..... Talk of Erap Estrada being disqualified, as well as rumors spread by both the Liberal Party (LP) and the Nacionalista Party (NP) camps that he is withdrawing from the presidential race and will be endorsing either party’s standard bearer can now be laid to rest, after the Commission on Elections (Comelec)’s second division junked the three disqualification cases against the former President, on grounds that he is not the incumbent president seeking reelection, and the belief that the decision on who is to be elected president is best left to the sovereign people.

From the start, the anti-Erap media and the anti-Erap elite groups tried to demolish his candidacy by stressing that Estrada would be disqualified, giving out all arguments about his being banned from running for the same seat, in a bid to weaken his candidacy..... MORE

Bereft of ally Ukraine, Georgia goes it alone against Moscow

ANALYSIS

01/21/2010

TBILISI — Ukraine’s expected turn toward Russia under a new president will leave pro-Western Georgia to go it alone in opposing Moscow in the former Soviet Union, analysts said.
With Orange Revolution leader Viktor Yushchenko’s inglorious ouster from office, Georgia has lost a key ally after nearly five years of joint efforts with Ukraine to transform the post-Soviet political landscape.

Hopes that both countries could be at the forefront of Western efforts to diminish Russia’s influence in its former empire have dimmed, analysts said, and Georgia is looking increasingly isolated..... MORE
