The government, which translates to the next president who is inheriting from Gloria, would not only be grappling with dwindling tax collections and higher debt payments but the possibility of increased cost of borrowings as credit rating firms have been reportedly thinking of downgrades on the country due to the runaway deficit.

The decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) unseating Grace Padaca as governor of Isabela and declaring Benjamin Dy as winner in the May 2007 elections is a victory for the province of Isabela. Further, it exposes a basic weakness of the Liberal Party (LP) of which Padaca is a member: An arrogance so perverse it borders on hubris.

As the December chill sets in, nothing is more heartwarming to the electorate of an entire province than to have their true will in a given election established after a long drawn-out process of protest and counter-protest as mandated by law. Fr. James B. Reuter, the most well-known Jesuit in the Philippines today and probably for a long time to come, was recently honored with the Serviam Award which is supposed to be the highest honor that the local Catholic Church bestows.

Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, Archbishop of Manila, personally handed the Serviam to the 93-year-old American priest in recognition of his lifelong work of helping educate the youth in the creative arts, mass media and communications.
