The plight of workers has not improved by any standard under the Aquino administration.

Instead jobs have become scarce and the Philippines is destined to have the highest unemployment rate in Asia despite the known efficiency of Filipinos in the global labor market.
It is not even the basic wage of workers that is the primarily problem of Filipinos who desire to work in the country and help in its development but the availability of jobs.

Noynoy has been trumpeting the jobs being created by business process outsourcing (BPO) companies as the industry booms primarily in the call center sector with something like 400,000 Filipinos being employed in different outsourced jobs..... MORE

A long fight begins to save Philippine languages

PORAC — Arnel Valencia felt humiliated at school when he was barred from using the language he spoke at home, part of a decades-long pattern of linguistic destruction across the Philippines.

“‘Stop talking like a bird. You should use English or the national language,” Valencia, now 39 and a village elder, said his first-grade teacher told him.

Valencia belongs to a small mountain tribe called Ayta Magindi that has for centuries inhabited the bone-dry, sparsely forested Zambales mountains just three hours’ drive from the nation’s megacity capital, Manila..... MORE

Assange Episode 3: Torture & double standards of the West

Assange Episode 3: Torture & double standards of the West

The world's most famous secret-spiller Julian Assange is on RT again, speaking with Tunisia’s first post-revolution leader about the West’s double standards in protecting human rights.

Tunisia was the cradle of the Arab Spring and was the impetus for people in other countries in the region to struggle for freedom, democracy, and their rights. Some say, the final straw that triggered the revolution was WikiLeaks’ release of diplomatic cables describing the President and his family as a mafia turning the country into a police state..... Red Cross prepares Chicago for mass exodus during NATO Summit?

Red Cross prepares Chicago for mass exodus during NATO Summit?

Chicago, Illinois is expected to swell with armed security forces during next month’s NATO Summit, but will that be enough to keep the Windy City under control? Officials are now readying a massive exit strategy to vacate the entire metropolis.

A memo has been sent out of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Red Cross office that confirms that officials are already taking measures to handle an emergency of epic proportions during the upcoming NATO Summit, scheduled for the week of May 20 in the city of Chicago, 70 miles to the south. In addition to armed security forces expected to begin patrolling Chicago as early as this week, authorities are now making plans to usher residents up to Milwaukee in case the planned NATO protests cause an emergency that warrants an immediate evacuation of the city..... Sunday dinner I was stunned out of my wits when someone asked where we were going for the Christmas holidays. I didn’t realize how quickly the days had been turning into weeks, the weeks into months, and now we’re on the fifth month of the year.

No wonder the papers and news channels have been concentrating as of late on who’s running with what coalition: Isang kindat na lang pala at eleksyon na naman.

There was no big lunch over at President Erap’s last Sunday, so I did not get to ask him if it was true he was putting his plans for 2013 “on hold,” as media reported last Friday. There are also talks he’s backing out completely and likely to support Vice-Mayor Isko Moreno instead, but I’ll believe only what I hear straight from Erap himself..... MORE

Inculturation VIEWPOINTS Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz 05/01/2012

Inculturation

VIEWPOINTS
Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz
05/01/2012
Such is the term used by the church when reference is made to the integration of the Christian faith into the culture itself of a people — in the different parts of the world, irrespective of their color and race.

In other words: Christ came. He preached the good news of salvation. Christ established the Church. People were converted to the Christian Faith. Christ died, resurrected and ascended into heaven. But the Church continued and still continues to teach and bring the faith to the four concerns of the globe — the Philippines well included. And the faith became a part of the Filipino culture. This in so many words, is the “inculturation” of the faith, the focal element of which is belief in God.

Once belief in God becomes nothing less than a cultural heritage of a people, there comes to fore certain noticeable realities among them, some of which are the following: Their belief in and reverence of God become as matter of course — although expressed in different ways and lived through different means. But just the same, faith in the Divine and respect for his Name developed as a way of life — as a part of living. Nevertheless, while observance of the teachings and the commandments of God are acknowledged, such are neither necessarily observed nor accordingly obeyed. This is a living reality even in Christian Philippines..... MORE

David and Goliath at Oriental Gardens AN OUTSIDERS VIEW Ken Fuller 05/01/2012

David and Goliath at Oriental Gardens

AN OUTSIDERS VIEW
Ken Fuller

The situation at Oriental Gardens, Makati, discussed in this column last Nov. 8 (“Towering Impunity”), is developing into a legal battle, with one of the condominium unit-owners filing a criminal complaint against the directors and officers of Federal Land Inc. (FLI) and associated companies.

Readers may recall that residents had been campaigning against the decision of FLI to build a third condo tower, now called Lilac, alongside the existing two, Lotus and Orchid. Although the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) would in December 2010 dismiss a complaint aimed at halting construction of the third tower on the grounds that the interests of existing residents would be adversely affected (there is a pending appeal at the Office of the President), it found in November that year that FLI had stepped over the line by pre-selling units at a time when its temporary license to sell had expired, and the board therefore issued a cease and desist order, banning further sales until a permanent license had been secured..... Beijing junks Manila plea for mediation in maritime row By Michaela P. del Callar 05/01/2012 China has rejected a proposal to bring the Scarborough Shoal row to international arbitration as tensions between Manila and Beijing locked in a three-week naval confrontation in the area showed no signs of easing. The Philippines received a diplomatic protest from China in response to its formal invitation to Beijing to join the country in bringing the territorial dispute to the United Nations-linked International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLoS) for resolution. Displeased by Manila’s proposal, a senior Philippine embassy official was summoned by the Chinese foreign ministry to receive the protest and to reiterate that the shoal is an “integrative part of Chinese territory.” Deng Zhonghua, head of China’s department of boundary and ocean affairs, said Manila’s plan to seek recourse before the Hamburg-based ITLoS “contravenes the fundamental principles of international relations, and also inflicts serious damage on the current international order.”

Baldoz: Workers get holiday pay today

By Mina Diaz 05/01/2012

The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) advised all employers to observe the correct pay rules on Labor Day, which is a holiday.

DoLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz urged all employers in the country’s private sector to bear at heart the welfare and protection of workers by observing the pay rules and other general labor standards for the regular holiday.

This year’s Labor Day celebration is the 110th in Philippine history and is being commemorated in honor of all Filipino workers with the theme, Pagtutulungan. Pagbabago. Disenteng trabaho.

Baldoz said that if a holiday falls on an employee’s regular workday, and the employee reports he is entitled to 200 percent of his basic wage on the first eight hours and, for work in excess of eight hours, to an additional 30 percent of his hourly rate on the said day. If the employee is absent, he is entitled to 100 percent of the regular daily rate, provided he was present, or was on leave with pay, on the workday immediately preceding the holiday..... MORE
