What is keeping the administration of Noynoy from revisiting the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (Epira), a law that had failed to live up to its promise of providing cheap electricity, is totally baffling.

But clues were brought to light on his administrations true motives during the Mindanao Power Summit where he resorted to blackmail to get his, and his cronies way with the power contracts.

Noynoy said that electricity users in Mindanao will have to live with high power bills since the region cannot rely anymore on cheap hydroelectric power plants as their main source of electricity, citing climate change and the speed of economic progress on the island that cannot be sustained by hydroelectric sources..... Libya freezes rewards for ex-rebels over mass fraud

Libya freezes rewards for ex-rebels over mass fraud

Libya's National Transitional Council has suspended a multi-million-dollar payout program to former anti-Gaddafi rebels after admitting it was steeped in fraud. Officials cited duplicate payouts, and claims from impostors and even the dead.

Since last year's overthrow of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, the National Transition Council, Libya's temporary replacement government, has promised to reward ordinary citizens who joined the rebellion.

The program began three months ago, with former rebels being given a one-time payment of up to $3,200 – a sizable sum for Libya. NTC has already paid out $1.4 billion..... MORE

Obama’s dirty dozen: Secret Service men behaving badly in Colombia

Eleven Secret Service agents have been relieved from their duties in light of claims they spent time set aside for planning President Obama’s visit drinking and visiting prostitutes.

They were on location in Cartagena, Colombia, preparing for Obama's arrival and participation in the Summit of the Americas. But instead, they engaged in activities that caused a scandal that could possibly overshadow the summit itself.

US Secret Service Assistant Director Paul Morrissey noted that allegations of misconduct were made against 11 Secret Service members, including both special agents and Uniformed Division officers. However, he did not specify exactly what kind of misconduct it was..... MORE

Impeachment case

\"Court,” “judges,” “prosecution,” “defense,” “witnesses,” “trial” — these are some of the standard terminologies used in the hearing of an Impeachment Case.

“Procedural Rule,” “Rule on Evidence” and the like — these are the usual trimmings that accompany the process in order to determine whether someone is eventually impeached, removed from office or otherwise.

Needless to say, considering the relative rarity, the big significance and impact of the process, the trial of an impeachment case is indeed interesting and even amusing at times.

The Legislative Department that makes the laws, the Executive Department that implements the laws made, and the Judicial Department that decides on the violations of existing laws — these are the three branches of government that are ordinarily involved in an impeachment case..... MORE

Beware of Koreans bearing gifts

NO NONSENSE

A couple of weeks ago, a Korean, One Goh, shattered the dream of Kathleen Ping, her husband and her children to attain a brighter future for them in the United States. Kathleen, a Filipina immigrant to the US, together with six Americans was shot by One Goh on his quest for revenge against some of his victims because they laughed at the way he pronounced the English words.

We were indeed very saddened by this news that one of our citizens became a victim of a crime in another country. We cannot avoid becoming sentimental that a brother or sister Filipino who leaves the country to find greener pasture as there is none here, died instead in another country she believed to be a land of promise.

Since the assailant is a Korean, it cannot be avoided that many of us also get pissed with the Koreans who reside here. Sometimes, because of this sentiment, some people may contemplate on avenging Kathleen’s death on any Korean, if they find any instance that a Korean misbehaves here. This feeling of hatred is borne out of sympathy perhaps not only to Kathleen but to her husband who may no longer be able to join her and the kids..... MORE

RP, US hold war games amid China tensions

04/15/2012
Thousands of American soldiers will begin nearly two weeks of war games in the Philippines tomorrow as Manila and Washington look to strengthen their military alliance amid concerns over China’s rising power.

The Balikatan exercises are an annual event but this year are expected to attract a greater focus with some of the drills set to be held close to sensitive South China Sea waters claimed by China.

The Philippines insists the exercises, involving 4,500 US personnel and 2,300 Filipino troops, should not be seen by Beijing as a provocation..... MORE

‘Surrender’; Malacañang demands Corona quit By Benjamin B. Pulta 04/15/2012

EMISSARY SOUGHT CJ’S RESIGNATION OR EARLY RETIREMENT

‘Surrender’; Malacañang demands Corona quit

By Benjamin B. Pulta 04/15/2012
The Palace had approached Chief Justice Renato Corona to seek his surrender through resignation or early retirement during the lull in the impeachment trial, the chief magistrate himself revealed yesterday.

Corona denounced what he felt were veiled threats from Malacañang promising hardships for the judicial department if the embattled chief magistrate does not back down from defending himself in the impeachment trial.

Malacañang demanded Corona’s surrender in the impeachment proceedings at the Senate court supposedly “to save the entire judiciary from the danger that it might undergo and to spare other justices, judges, court officials and employees from uncertainties,” Corona quoted an unnamed Palace official as telling him during a recent forum in Batangas City..... Shifting to renewable energy sources is already part of the Aquino government’s long-term plan to address the energy problem in the country, particularly in Mindanao, deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte declared on Saturday.

In a radio interview over government-run radio station dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, Valte said that while the government looks at adopting renewable sources of power, it may come at a premium and may impact on consumers’ electricity bills.

Some of the government critics have been calling on the government to carry out short-term and immediate solutions to the Mindanao power crisis by resorting to renewable energy..... MORE

The Quezon City government will formally ask the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to consider taking out the rotunda that it has installed at the intersection of Quirino Highway and Mindanao Avenue following mounting complaints from motorists traversing the area.
