101 years later, women workers face the same exploitation, oppression

“Filipino women are calling for an end to US intervention, the rape of women and of our nation.” – Rep. Luz Ilagan, Gabriela Women’s Party

MANILA — Thousands of women filled the streets to mark the 101st commemoration of the International Women’s Day. They criticized violations of women’s rights being perpetrated by the administration of Benigno Aquino III.

“Women are condemning the criminal partnership of Presidents Aquino and Barrack Obama in subjugating Filipino women under the yoke of imperialist military terrorism and economic plunder of our national patrimony,” Lana Linaban, secretary general of Gabriela, said.

Protesters held a protest action at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila before they marched toward Mendiola at around 5:00 p.m., where they burned an effigy: a huge yellow ribbon that Aquino used in his presidential campaign with stars and stripes similar to the American flag..... MORE

Weak denials

With Chief Justice (CJ) Renato Corona baring certain incidents, such as his advice on EO1, or the Truth Comission that was sought by Noynoy for approval of the Supreme Court (SC) as well as a senator-judge, TG Guingona offering the CJ the Palace deal of “term-sharing” of the post with Justice Antonio Carpio, denials were quick to come from Malacañang and its senator-ally, even as they also admitted to certain things which obviously they can hardly deny.

Presidential mouthpiece Edwin Lacierda admitted that the CJ and Noynoy did have a meeting, at a sister’s house, but claimed it was Corona who had asked for the meeting, not Noynoy, apart from saying that a retired SC justice had facilitated the meeting.

So why hold the meeting in a sister’s home, instead of Malacañang, if it was indeed the CJ who sought an “audience” with Noynoy..... MORE

US: Turning war-fear into warfare

US: Turning war-fear into warfare

Ever since its creation, the US has had a role to play in combat operations worldwide. Today the country’s public opinion is dominated by warfare, making American society all-too-easily manipulated and turned against practically any country.

The US has a strong record of persuading the public that war is the only way.

A military industrial complex worth billions of dollars is largely America’s driving force. Deeply rooted in the system, it would serve no purpose if there was no one to fight...... MORE

Official: ‘US govt already seized hundreds of foreign domains’

Official: ‘US govt already seized hundreds of foreign domains’

US seizure of a Canadian gambling website caused online outcry as it was registered abroad and thought to be outside American jurisdiction. But this is far from isolated; it has emerged that the US has seized hundreds of foreign domain names.

US customs official Nicole Navas confirmed that the US government has taken control of 750 domains, “most with foreign-based registrars” over the past few years.

Operation “In Our Sites”, an initiative run by US and Immigration Customs Enforcement, is dedicated to shutting down illegal websites that it believes are involved in the distribution of copyright goods and copyright works. It was initially created in 2010 to police US-owned domains, but now appears to have extended its reach using federal court orders to shut down websites..... MORE

Obama signs anti-protest Trespass Bill

Obama signs anti-protest Trespass Bill

Only days after clearing Congress, US President Barack Obama signed his name to H.R. 347 on Thursday, officially making it a federal offense to cause a disturbance at certain political events — essentially criminalizing protest in the States.

RT broke the news last month that H.R. 347, the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011, had overwhelmingly passed the US House of Representatives after only three lawmakers voted against it. On Thursday this week, President Obama inked his name to the legislation and authorized the government to start enforcing a law that has many Americans concerned over how the bill could bury the rights to assemble and protest as guaranteed in the US Constitution..... Bulatlat Live: 2012 International Women’s Day

MANILA — In the Philippines, women workers and women rights advocates commemorate the 101st International Women’s Day with a protest action. Gabriela, the country’s largest women group, spearheaded series of activities to bring to the national consciousness the plight of the women in the country.

Unabated price hikes in petroleum products and other staple products, increasing presence of the U.S. military, and the continuing oppression and exploitation of women workers are among the issues that Gabriela and other rights advocates are protesting..... MORE

CJ pressed to bare all on Luisita issue before impeach court

By Charlie V. Manalo 03/10/2012

Irony of ironies. The man they wanted removed from office is the very same man they now pin their hope to deliver to them the Cojuangco-Aquino family-owned Hacienda Luisita.

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casio yesterday called on Chief Justice Renato Corona to tell the Senate impeachment court trying his case all he knew about the demand by the family of President Aquino for a P10-billion compensation for Hacienda Luisita.

Casio, one of the 188 lawmakers who signed the impeachment complaint against the Chief Justice, said Corona should expose the Palace emissaries who applied pressure on the Supreme Court to overturn its 14-0 decision in favor of the farmer-tenants of Hacienda Luisita..... MORE

House ignores Tribune’s request for prosecution’s SALn

03/10/2012
House of Representatives Secretary General Marilyn Barua-Yap has completely ignored the formal request of the Daily Tribune to provide Publisher and Editor in-Chief Ninez Cacho-Olivares copies of the prosecution team’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALn).

In a letter dated Feb. 20, 2012 to Yap, the Tribune specifically asked her to provide the following members of Congress, namely, Congressmen Niel Tupas Jr., lead prosecutor, Reynaldo Umali, Elpidio Barzaga, Jr., Rodolfo Farinas, Lorenzo Tanada. Raul Daza. Joseph Emilio Abaya. Neri Colmenares, Kaka Nag-ao, Giorgidi Aggabao, Miro Quimbo. Sherwin Tugna and Sonny Angara.

The purpose stated in the letter is that the Tribune plans to do an article on the status of public officials, such as the SALn status of the prosecution panel, as the prosecutors, from their arguments before the impeachment court appear to see SALns non-disclosure and government officials and employees omissions of their assets as a crime worthy of impeachment for impeachable officers and a long jail term for non impeachable officers..... CHIEF JUSTICE CONTINUES ROADSHOW

Another senator asked me to quit— CJ

By Benjamin B. Pulta and Angie M. Rosales 03/10/2012

Despite calls to back down and have the court decide his case, Chief Justice Renato Corona continued doing rounds of media outfits, saying that yet another senator whom he did not name also sought his resignation and repeated the offer for “term-sharing” with Senior Justice Antonio Carpio by Sen. Teofisto “TG” Guingona.

In an interview on radio station dzRH radio, the embattled Chief Magistrate spoke of an emissary of a senator, whom he did not identify, as having asked him to resign.

He also said his lunch meeting with Guingona last year was not a “purely social lunch,” as claimed by Guingona..... MORE

Book honors Aurora Quezon

03/10/2012
Senator Edgardo Angara and Sonia Pinto Ner recently launched their latest collaboration, a book entitled Aurora Aragon Quezon, in time for the worldwide celebration of Women’s Day. Aurora is a photobiography about the wife of former President Manuel L. Quezon.

“Aurora was a woman ahead of her time,” said Angara. “She lived a low-profile life, but her initiatives continue to impact us today. Among other things, she was the founder of the Philippine Red Cross, and an advocate of women’s right to suffrage. We owe many of our current privileges and liberties to her determination and generosity.”.... MORE

CoA starts audit of two concessionaires’ water rates

03/10/2012
Finally acting on the request of a member of the House of Representatives, the Commission on Audit (CoA) has started an audit examination of the highly questionable water rates imposed by two private concessionaires of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to determine whether or not a full-blown fraud investigation would be necessary.

In his letter to Bagong Henerasyon Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy, Leonor Boado, chief of the CoA fraud audit and investigation office under the legal services sector, said the audit unit has conducted an initial evaluation of the solon’s request for omnibus audit of the water concession system that has triggered unabated increases in water rates in Metro Manila and neighboring localities in Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan.

Boado said a rate audit will be conducted to “establish whether or not the case is ripe for a full-blown fraud investigation.”.... MORE

‘Unabated oil price hikes will trigger massive protest actions’

By Charlie V. Manalo 03/10/2012
The Anakpawis Party-list bared yesterday it will start a petition signing against oil price hikes and the Oil Deregulation Law to press the Aquino government to act on the successive oil price adjustments which would eventually lead to massive street protest if the Aquino administration chooses to ignore them.

This even as an opposition lawmaker dared the government to use the windfall profit it has raked in from the value-added tax (VAT) on oil to help ease the burden of the transport sector.

Every Monday starting March 12, Anakpawis and its member organizations will make rounds of LRT and MRT stations, bus terminals, public markets and malls in Metro Manila to conduct a petition signing campaign against oil price hikes. The activity is also in preparation for the nationally-coordinated protest against oil price hikes that will take place on March 15..... MORE
