Iran threatens to hit US targets worldwide in case of war

On Wednesday the Iranian ambassador to Moscow, Seyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi declared that Iran has the capabilities to carry out military strikes on US interests around the globe.

This comes after President Obama announced the United States would freeze all Iranian assets held in the US. The executive order which was signed on Monday was in reaction to what the US is calling deceptive practices by Iran.

"The issue of a military attack from America on the Islamic Republic of Iran has been on the agenda for several years," said Sajjadi..... MORE

British, Qatari troops already waging secret war in Syria?

British and Qatari troops are directing rebel ammunition deliveries and tactics in the bloody battle for Homs, according to an Israeli website known for links to intelligence sources.

Four centers of operation have been established in the city with the troops on the ground paving the way for an undercover Turkish military incursion into Syria.

The debkafile site said the presence of British and Qatari troops in Homs topped the agenda of Tuesday’s talks between Assad’s officials and head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov. .... MORE

Refugee camp massacre: Libyan militia launch racist raid

Refugee camp massacre: Libyan militia launch racist raid

Heavily armed fighters have attacked a camp of about 1,500 refugees on the outskirts of Tripoli, opening fire on its inhabitants. At least six were killed in the incident raising fears that civilians have little protection from militias running amok.

Moreover, the fact that the attack took place just outside the capital itself begs the question of just how much control the interim government actually has over the country.

"Men from Misrata came to the camp [in Janzour district] at 10 o'clock [Monday]. We knew they were from Misrata because it was written all over their cars," camp resident Huda Bel-Eid said at Tripoli Medical Hospital, Al Jazeera reports..... MORE

Senate sneaks in SOPA under a new name

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) launches a second round of attacks in an attempt to censor the Internet.

After trying to adopt Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), both pieces of legislation turned out to be a disaster, causing outrage among Internet giants and ordinary users alike. Congress had to retreat. However it's determined to get what it wants this time.

After the shelving of SOPA and PIPA back in January Reid stated,“There is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved.”.... MORE

Is it not only possible but also probable that the now ongoing impeachment trial has much bigger implications and more profound consequences in the country than whether the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is in fact impeached or not?

It is not simply conceivable but already factual that all concerned government agencies plus needed public resources under the baton of the Chief Executive are at the disposal of the prosecution, to get the representatives in the House plus certain members of the Senate to do as the bidding and command of Malacaang? Is it not wherefore rather predictable that the accused is bound to be done away with at the end of the day all the arguments of the defense to the contrary notwithstanding? Meantime what is happening to and in the country is anything but good news much less is it more fun..... MORE

‘JV’ airs warning on return of US military bases to RP

By Charlie V. Manalo 02/09/2012

San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito yesterday warned of re-opening US military bases in the country, saying the Philippines will not benefit anything from doing such.

“We fought long and hard to oust the US bases in Subic and Olongapo City. To re-open the US bases or set up new bases anywhere in the country should be non-negotiable. Clearly, at this point, our country does not have much to gain from this strategic military and economic plan of the US,” said Ejercito, whose father, former President Joseph Estrada led the opposition to extending the US military bases agreement in 1990.

Ejercito made the statement over reports that the United States will be sending US Marines on rotation, sending most of them to the Philippines, Guam and Australia in line with strengthening US presence in the Asia Pacific region..... MORE

LP cracks showing amid rift with local execs over IRA

02/09/2012
Cracks appeared to be showing in the ruling Liberal Party’s show of solidarity as Malacañang opted to keep mum on a petition for certiorari and mandamus and prohibition filed by a former staunch ally of President Aquino before the Supreme Court on alleged misap-propriation of Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) funds for local governments.

In a text message sent to the Tribune, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda ysterday said they have yet to receive a copy of the Mandanas petition.

“We have not seen the petition yet. We will make a comment once we are furnished a copy,” he added..... MORE

Government to force OFWs to leave Syria

By Michaela P. del Callar 02/09/2012
Amid the dismal turnout of evacuees, the Philippine government will try to force Filipinos out of Syria in anticipation of further escalation of violence in the strife-torn Middle East state.

“We may need to go one step further and resort to a strategy of extraction,” said Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario following bloodshed in the Syrian city of Homs, where over 100 anti-government protesters and rebels were reportedly killed by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, one of the worst in the continuing months-long upheaval in the country.

Del Rosario said the government will activate a rapid response team made up of the Philippine National Police, the Department of Labor and Department of Foreign Affairs personnel to oversee the forced evacuation of Filipinos..... MORE

Hopes dim for survivors in quake-hit Negros

02/09/2012
Hopes have become dim for government and private rescuers to recover survivors from the landslides that hit two residential communities in Negros Oriental province where more than 70 people are still unaccounted three days after magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck in the Visayas region.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Undersecretary Benito Ramos said that while authorities are still hopeful to recover survivors in Barangay Planas in Guihulngan City and Barangay Solongan in La Libertad, both in Negros Oriental, chances are very slim.

“It’s been three days now... I am still hoping against hope but the chances are very slim,” admitted Ramos, who was personally overseeing search and retrieval operations in the affected areas..... MORE

Garcia expelled from PMA alumni

By Mario J. Mallari 02/09/2012
An association of graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) finally terminated former military comptroller retired Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia from its ranks, eight years after he was principally charged in the alleged massive corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Brig. Gen. Remy Tigulo, chairman of the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association Inc. (PMAAAI), cited the conviction of Garcia, of PMA Class of 1971, before the general court martial as approved by the commander in chief President Aquino on September last year as basis for his termination.

In the latest issue of The Cavalier, the official publication of the PMAAAI, Tigulo said the expulsion of Garcia was in “accordance with the association’s rules on membership which provides that a member who has been convicted with finality of a crime involving moral turpitude is subject to expulsion.”.... QC gov’t warns anew residents living in earthquake-prone areas

By Arlie O. Calalo 02/09/2012
The Quezon City government yesterday warned anew the residents whose houses and structures are located in earthquake-prone areas to vacate their places as a tragedy can occur anytime like what happened a few days ago in the Visayan region.

This as Mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista, at an executive meeting attended by members of the Quezon City Press Club, stressed that the local government has been pre-occupied in formulating measures and contingency plans in case a tragedy takes place in the city.

“I am now again appealing to our residents, especially those whose houses and structures are on top of the fault line to vacate their places to save their lives,” Bautista said..... MORE
