If the argument is about economic growth, no matter what Noynoy, Butch Abad and his economic advsiers say, it will always have to be measured against the economic growth under Gloria Arroyo and Noynoy’s economic growth figures thus far.

Abad cannot simply argue, as a reply to Gloria’s treatise of “It’s the economy, student” referring to her one time student at the Ateneo, Noynoy, that the nine years of Gloria was a “huge failure” because “she turned her back on the her big opportunity (as) we ended up suffering from those years of very bad governance.”

“Repeatedly the performance of her government — the economic and political — has been exposed as a huge failure over the past nine-and-a-half years,” he added.

This is hardly in defense of Gloria and her administration, but if such is the argument, this can also be tossed back to the Noynoy regime..... MORE

Michael Hastings: Pentagon Press Corps is an extension of Pentagon

A year after a scathing article in Rolling Stone forced US Army general Stanley McChrystal out of his post in Afghanistan, journalist Michael Hastings reflects on the experience that ended up not at all like he would have imagined.

“I was somewhat surprised by the response,” Hastings told RT. His article, The Runaway General, made headlines after it outted McChrystal and other top-brass in the military for showing a lack of faith in the operation and the Obama administration’s command in Afghanistan. By the time the fallout subsided, McChrystal was removed and Hastings was a hero for his no-holds barred account of the war machine’s bureaucracy..... MORE

While Iran is seeking support in South America, the US is trying to convince the world’s second largest economy, China, to back its sanctions aimed at Iran's Central Bank and oil industry, though it seems unlikely Beijing will be swayed.

Condoms become mandatory in Los Angeles

Sorry, shoppers. If you like your porn flick penises naked and insist that your adult films cancel any camera shots that capture condom-clad units, you are about to be in a whole mess of trouble.

Fear and loathing in Central Asia: Will US go to war with Iran?

As sparks fly dangerously close to the powder keg of US-Iranian relations, speculation is rife and rumors are spreading like wildfire. Will there be a war? Who wants it? And what will happen to this very lucrative region?

Google the words “Iran”, “USA” and “war” and you get over 140 million hits. Many believe the possibility of a military conflict between the two is not even a question of “if”, but a question of “when”. And there is definitely enough evidence around to lend support to these beliefs..... MORE

I have a friend leaving for Italy on Friday, January 13. She is a mother of two adorable kids. We have been friends for almost a decade. Not only will I miss a good friend but two children will be left behind by their mother to find a job abroad.

Many people think that in order to provide a better future for their family, one has to sacrifice and go abroad. Some people say that there is no bright future for their families here in our country. They muster the courage to leave the country and go abroad, clueless of what’s waiting for them..... MORE

Abad’s wife scored for sitting on bills amending Oil Deregulation Law

By Charlie V. Manalo 01/14/2012

Members of the House of Representatives yesterday criticized House energy committee chairman, Batanes Rep. Henedina Abad, for not taking up a package of bills seeking to amend, if not repeal, the Oil Deregulation Law which has been the subject of criticisms for failing to spark competition among oil firms and importers that would have controlled the skyrocketing cost of petroleum products.

Records reveal the committee has at least eight pending measures filed by opposition and administration congressmen, two of them filed a few weeks after the 15th Congress opened in 2010..... MORE

CJ: 45 property titles a cheap shot, big hoax

By Benjamin B. Pulta 01/14/2012

A big hoax and a cheap shot. This is what the claim of the House prosecutors of 45 property titles allegedly belonging to the impeached Chief magsitrate was.

Chief Justice Renato Corona denounced this as a blatant attempt at a smear campaign the recent public statement of the House prosecution panela alleging no less than 45 unreported titles supposedly belonging to the magistrate.

Earlier, the CJ had scored the prosecution for the list of properties, saying that they (President Aquino and his allies) are trying to portray him as a thief, adding: “I am not a thief like them.”.... MORE

Arroyo not telling truth in her ‘economic paper’ — San Juan lawmaker

By Gerry Baldo 01/14/2012

Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has not been truthful in her “economic paper” which was read by a University of the Philippines professor at the Manila Hotel last Thursday.

San Juan Rep. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito said all that was written in the “economic paper” was about the positive aspects of Mrs. Arroyo’s administration. It was bereft of the anomalies that happened during her term.

“Para fair, sana sinabi din niya ang mga corruption, pandaraya sa election at pang-aabuso sa kanyang administrasyon,” Ejercito said..... MORE

CPP warns of more attacks on poor by Aquino gov’t

By Mario J. Mallari 01/14/2012

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) has branded the violent demolition of shanties in San Juan City as a clear sign of the Aquino administration’s “anti-people character” as it warned of more attacks against the poor by the present government to push its so-called public-private partnership (PPP) program.
In a statement, the CPP noted that fully-armed demolition teams from the Philippine National Police last Wednesday violently dispersed the residents of Barangay Corazon de Jesus who were protecting their homes.

“Armed with automatic rifles, truncheons and teargas and backed by heavy machinery, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and demolition crew attacked the community and broke the barricades put up by the residents,” the CPP said..... MORE
