Happy New Year to All!

December 31, 2011, 5:49pm
MANILA, Philippines — Thank God for the New Year! Significantly ushered in by the recent celebration of the Birth of the Child Jesus, it gives us a fresh sense of hope. It gives us the opportunity to start anew, drawing inspiration from the triumphs experienced and discerning lessons from difficulties encountered in the year just ended.

Time indeed swiftly passes by, especially with the innumerable concerns we have had to focus on in our personal life and in our national and global relations. While the year 2011 was a year of triumphs for many Filipinos in various fields, it was also a year of distressing events for many of our countrymen who suffered from natural and man-made calamities..... Ron Paul was right about CIA drug deal

Texas Congressman Ron Paul has long lobbied against government restrictions on the drug use of American citizens, but in the past the outspoken presidential hopeful has linked the US with narcotics closer than one might imagine.

As early as 1988, Paul was preaching of a relationship between the Central Intelligence Agency and Contras in Nicaragua amid the Iran-Contra scandal that plagued the Reagan administration. That relationship, said Paul, was one built with an intricate drug trade..... MORE

The year of dissent: Keeping America’s 1% Occupied

When the Occupy Wall Street movement set up camp in New York’s financial district in September 2011, few people paid much attention to the self-proclaimed 99 per cent. But the tents in Zuccotti Park were like a spark to America’s social kindling.

Soon, the indignant voice of the people spread across the country. People supported a movement aimed at awakening all to the negative effects of the growing, and strangely seldom-questioned, income and wealth disparities in the country..... MORE

MANILA, Philippines — Two weeks ago, storm Sendong wrought havoc on Northern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, taking the lives of more than a thousand people. But Sendong was not the only obstacle that took the Philippines by storm in 2011.

A series of oil price hikes during the first quarter drove up the prices of food and other basic commodities in the country, as in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, the Eurozone debt crisis, China's cooling economy and the continued economic slump in the United States slowed global economic growth, affecting the Philippines’ own. Political unrest, fueled by discontent over persisting inequalities and job losses, has spilled over the rest of the world through the Occupy Movement..... MORE
