FoI proponent caves in to Palace, to revisit key provisions of info bill

02/19/2011
The main author of the Freedom of Information (FoI) bill has given in to pressure from Malacañang as he now expresses support for another look at the proposed measure which is being passed off as designed to give the public easier access to information held by the government.

The FoI bill narrowly missed being passed during the 14th Congress after the House of Representatives failed to ratify the bicameral conference report contrary to what the Senate did, prompting advocates to refile it in the 15th Congress.

Most of the measures filed in both chambers of Congress adopt the bicameral version in full. The proposed legislation, however, was not included in the initial list of bills Malacañang wants the legislature to prioritize due to certain concerns.
