Erap twits Aquino: I didn’t seek GMA’s pardon

BALAYAN, Batangas —Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) standard bearer former President Joseph Estrada, reacting to Liberal Party (LP) bet Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s comment that he is against Estrada having been pardoned by President Arroyo, yesterday twitted him, saying that he had nothing to do with the absolute pardon granted to him.

“He (Aquino) should be told that I did not ask, nor did I seek the pardon. She (Arroyo) could have had an attack of conscience as she may have realized that there was a miscarriage of justice (in granting that pardon). After all, there really was no proof that I stole a single centavo of government money,” Estrada said in an interview at the municipal hall here.

“I really don’t understand why he attacked me. I have not attacked him at all, but I will respond to what he said. I do not compare myself to his father (Sen. Ninoy Aquino),” but Estrada reminded the LP presidential bet that his father, Ninoy, was also convicted by a special court created by the Marcos government. “Let him (Noynoy) not forget that the special court had convicted his father for murder, subversion. Ninoy was convicted, too,” Estrada stressed.... MORE

NY Times exposes Noynoy’s forked tongue

Just like his mother, the late President Cory Aquino, Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino is only using the issue of the Hacienda Luisita distribution to gain mass support while never meaning to do it.

Nacionalista Party (NP) spokesman and senatorial bet Gilbert Remulla said Aquino was caught practicing “political doublespeak” on the ticklish Hacienda Luisita issue based on a New York Times exclusive report in which his kin belied his vow to distribute the vast sugar plantation.

“Senator Aquino said in his latest political ads that he will continue the fight. I think he owes it to the Filipino people to first settle his family’s fight with the farmers and tenants of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac,” Remulla said.... MORE

Finally, Manila is being rid of the Cory-Ninoy banners and yellow ribbons tied in trees and lampposts that have ungainly dotted the Manila landscape for so long that it was evident these were being used by the Liberal Party (LP) and its standard bearer, Noynoy Aquino, as campaign materials.

Notice too, that it is only in Manila that these banners and yellow ribbons surfaced, since the mayor of Manila is allied with the LP bet.

It is clearly a shameless way to keep on using the Cory-Ninoy banners and yellow ribbons as campaign materials for the LP standard bearer, who appears to have no qualms about using his parents as campaign props, since he apparently can’t stand on his own merit.... MORE

Gloria and her Foreign Affairs chief, Alberto Romulo, want to project that her administration, as well as the country, as being so against the ruling Myanmar junta in banning Aung San Suu Kyi from elections.

Being a sovereign country, the Philippines has no right to meddle in the affairs of another country to protest this move of the junta that had not allowed Suu Kyi, who won the polls years ago, to have her sit in power.

Moreover, the Philippines, under Gloria Arroyo and her administration, is hardly in a position to assume a high moral and even constitutional ground, given the fact that Gloria and her civil socialites, Romulo included, trampled on the Constitution and democratic rules, apart of course, from cheating again, in the 2004 polls, to win Malacañang.... Three factors damaging Villar

If media reports are to be believed, the Nacionalista Party (NP) standard bearer’s campaign for the presidency is coming along very nicely. Manny Villar is said to be now in a “statistical tie” with the Liberal Party’s standard bearer, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino and the NP is said to be winning new supporters all the time.

That is what the media are reporting about Villar’s quest for the nation’s highest position. However, the situation on the ground appears to be quite different. The campaign of the one-time representative of Las Piñas City seems to have run into trouble on account of three factors, all of them traceable to his conduct prior to and during the campaign.

The first of the three factors has to do with the exposé of Sen. Jamby Madrigal on the insertion of a second appropriation for the extension of the C-5 roadway and the subsequent Senate inquiry into the allegation.... MORE

He said he was a composer, but I can no longer recall his name.

I still keep the compact disc he gave me in 2002, when the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA), first honored Manny Pacquiao as the country’s Athlete of the Year for retaining the International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Super-bantamweight crown, which he snatched from South Africa Lehlohonolo Ledwaba of South Africa only the previous year.

He requested a song he composed for Pacquiao to be played while the boxing champion was to receive his first PSA grand trophy, which he earned for his two-round demolition of Jorge Eliezer Juilo of Colombia and mandatory challenger Fahprakob Rakkiat-Gym of Thailand in one.... MORE

A BBC feature last Saturday night showed viewers everywhere that the Philippines has more to offer than beach destinations… or at least, that there is more to our islands than the dreaded Three Cs, for that matter.

The Three Cs do not refer to cancer (although it might as well, to borrow Rizal “social cancer”). They are the top three ugly truths about our country that have constantly made it to international news. These are “Corruption,” “Calamities” and “Crime.”

Like many developing countries, the Philippines has struggled with mixed fortunes. On one hand, we have rich resources and a treasure trove in human resources, yet our economy has been inching along for decades while our Southeast Asian neighbors have grown by leaps and bounds.... MORE

Our condolences to the families of former Budget Sercretary Emilia “Emy” Boncodin and Fr. Joseph Galdon, S. J., who passed away within a day of each other this week. Boncodin, 55, passed away last Monday due to cardiac arrest while undergoing dialysis at the National Kidney Institute while Galdon had a quiet passing into the Almighty’s embrace. Both dedicated to their professions (Boncodin started as a member of the staff of then Deputy Neda Director-General Eki Cardenas during the Marcos years while Galdon tutored many of the leaders of various sectors and professions as a beloved teacher at the Ateneo de Manila University), they were epitome of integrity and excellence in their time. Having spent most of their years in the service of their fellowmen they will surely be missed.

I have said this before and will say it again. The real campaign for the May 2010 elections starts on March 26 when the local candidates begin their push for the much coveted vote in their respective area. Before that what we have are preliminary operations akin to the party primaries in the United States where the official candidates of the two contending parties are winnowed and selected for the Big Fight culminating on election day....
