The lease of expensive generator barges and the signing of electricity contracts with the Aboitizes and the Alcantaras, known business associates of President Arroyo and her spouse, Mike Arroyo, will be the main feature of the declaration yesterday of a state of power crisis at Mindanao.

Arroyo gave her consent to Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes’ proposal to invoke Section 71 of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (Epira).

The various power contracts are estimated close to P10 billion, according to an energy sector source.... MORE

CEBU CITY — Former President Joseph Estrada, who has been consistently rating in third place following Liberal Party presidential contender Noynoy Aquino and Nacionalista Party standard bearer Manny Villar, has now moved to second place with 21.5 percent, dislodging Villar who dropped to 17 percent. Aquino remained on top with 25 percent.

According to Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) campaign manager, former Ambassador Ernesto Maceda, the survey was commissioned by another political party and the party would not want to disclose who among the presidential contenders financed the pollster.

“The latest survey I saw which is commissioned by one of our opponents came out with this: Villar was already in number 3 with 17 percent. To complete the result, Noynoy got 25 percent and 21.5 percent for Erap,” Maceda said.... MORE

CA junks Ping’s petition to stop DoJ probe on Dacer murder case

The Court of Appeals (CA) has dismissed the motion for reconsideration filed by lawyers of Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson to stop the Department of Justice (DoJ) from conducting a preliminary investigation into the Dacer-Corbito double murder case.

In a resolution issued by CA 10th Division Associate Justice Juan Enriquez Jr., Lacson’s motion for reconsideration was deemed “moot and academic” as the DoJ panel of prosecutors had already terminated its investigation and filed criminal charges against the fugitive senator before the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC).

Manila RTC Branch 18 Presiding Judge Myra Garcia-Fernandez issued a warrant for Lacson’s arrest last February 5.... MORE

Gloria’s watch can best be remembered by her administration’s financial mismanagement.

The biggest word the past few days out of Malacañang has been legacy or inheritance or what Arroyo supposedly would leave her successor.
When Arroyo snatched the presidency from former President Joseph Estrada in 2001, she inherited what the civil socialites vilified Estrada of having a mismanaged government, with her backers citing the worsening budget shortfalls after a P1.45 billion surplus in 1997 and a P50 billion deficit in 1998.

In the first full year of Estrada’s abbreviated administration, he had a P112 billion deficit in 1999, followed by a P134.2 billion shortfall in 2000.... MORE
