Mounted on a special van stage and having his senatorial candidates, along with his vice presidential candidate Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and his Manila mayoralty candidate, Lito Atienza, former Manila mayor and Environment secretary, Estrada reaffirmed his charisma with the masses, showing one and all that he remains as strong as ever after thousands of his supporters converged on his proclamation rally at the Plaza Miranda yesterday at the start of the formal campaign season.

Estimates were anywhere from over 5,000 to 15,000 persons attended the occasion where the entire senatorial line-up of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP)-United Opposition (UNO), together with local candidates in Manila and other areas in Metro Manila were introduced.... MORE

The year that began on April 14, 2009 is a grand year for the Society of Jesus in the Philippines. That date marked the sesquicentenary — the 150th anniversary — of the Society of Jesus in this country.

On April 14, 1859, 10 Jesuit priests arrived in Manila to begin which was to be a 150-year love affair between the Philippines and the Society of Jesus. The Society’s fine record as a teaching order having proceeded the new arrivals, the governor-general of the day, Fernando Norzagaray y Escudero, gave the Society authority to establish a school in Intramuros. The Escuela Municipal, which was to be the only primary school in Manila, received its first students on Oct. 1, 1859.

In 1865, during the governor-generalship of Juan de Lara y Irigoyen, the Escuela Municipal became the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. The Ateneo was on its way.... MORE
