The brand of traditional politics based on guns, gold and goons is still here to stay. But today it would seem that politics has evolved into something more demeaning to the principles of electoral democracy, namely the three ‘M’s — money, media and market.

It is still traditional politics but in its near perfect form that rides alongside the patronage of the rich and famous and what money, media and the market dictates. 

We need money of course to keep a decent campaign running, but when money seems to be like an endless stream from whatever eternal source watering a garden of sorts in Alice’s Wonderland, then one quizzes himself with prospects of the shape of things in aftermath. 

In a country and people so drenched in chronic poverty, moneyed people are almost the “gods” whose Midas touch could be a promise of material redemption. When a wealthy businessman, for instance enters politics, the forced impression would be that it is an “act of sacrifice for the sake of public service.”.... MORE
